8 months later... (since that first dance clip I posted) - Josie took this yesterday at BYU, with her phone...

ENJOY!! : )

BACKGROUND: Last fall Mr. Amazing Boy surprised us by choosing to casually dive in to an already up and running after-school dance program - that his buddies had already been doing for a couple of years. (Run by parents of his good friend)... Then we were even more surprised by how quickly he kept improving at it, and how matter-of-fact he's been about it all... To him it's just 'what you do' for fun at his school - 'no big whoop'. For all of June & July, M-Th 9-11 AM, he went to his school, talked airplanes and weapons w/ his 'home boys', while also practicing their dance moves, as well as remembering to escort their ever changing partners on and off the dance floor... Then yesterday they competed at BYU. For each event (or type of dance) there were probably 40-50 couples (from all over the state) on the floor to begin with - from which the judges picked 12 to dance again, then chose the best of them to award with ribbons.
He and Tina won 6th place in the Cha-Cha!!

Hey 'Peeps', where will you be on Sunday afternoon?

Hopefully you'll be right here with us - as we welcome Calvin home!

He'll be speaking in church at 1:30, but would love to see and hug you anytime before or after that.

This entire week is incredibly packed with kids' activities and long work hours, aside from any Calvin preparations we're wanting time for... So at this point, our realistic plans for Sunday are more simple than ever:

1 Bottomless Bowl of the Kokster's Fresh Salsa Extraordinare + 1 Endless Supply of Chips + 1 Big Bunch of Visiting with Calidad (Quality) Loved Ones & Friends = PURE JOY for us all!

In related news:

I had the BEST surprise last Sunday between sessions of Conference. Just as I began a moment of peace to myself back in my room, I got word that i was needed in the front room... Usually in this situation I would probe further to determine if it was a matter that warranted the immediate sacrifice of my moment, but amazingly this time, I didn't even think of going there. Probably because of all the projects and deadlines going on around here these days, I simply did as I was told... And as soon as I walked in the room I saw Calvin smiling at me on Sean's big iMac screen! "SURPRISE!" He and the others said to me, "Happy Mothering Day, Mom", he continued. He was at the home of the Clark's, (the wonderful Sr Couple serving in Oxford that had him over on Christmas to webcam home). It was HEAVEN for all of us! Fortunately, last Sunday was England's equivalent of our Mother's Day, so those serving in the London South Mission can call (or webcam) their Mums on either of the 2!! SCORE! Sean & Josie quickly got ahold of Ben & Olivia, who soon joined in. It was especially FUN for me to see how excited Calvin was to see bright-eyed Cohen, awake and happy! PURE JOY! This silly screen shot was a result of our telling him to hold his head right where it was a second because the kitchen light behind him made him look like an angel- HA! The little square at the top is us seeing him see us : )

Josie's amazing cello concert a week ago, and what it entailed.
The back drop for Ashton's school play that Sean & Hannah finished painting today. It opens in 2 days. He plays Chi-Fu, brown-noser of the Emperor in Mulan... I sewed the last bit of his costume on my lunch hour today - Josie & Papa have almost finished his signature hat.
The prized Pinewood Derby cars that all 3 'little boys' in my household have been passionately working on (obsessing?) for this evening's Cub race.
The quilt I finally got finished for Cohen!!
The breakthroughs made at work, (after over 2 years of first discovering a glitch, and trying to get to the bottom of a cause and solutions for process improvement)... but of course, how much MORE work and time it's been for me the past few days, before it begins to save time for all of us, and better serves the public... At a time when i really need to be blowing through my own usual workload so I can be off on Friday to clear a bedroom for Cal, then off next week for Spring Break...
If only I had any energy to pull all this off ...
I think I'll go look at those few fun photos of Cohen again before I collapse!

i had such a fun time at the wedding! it was a very last minute decision to come but i am so glad i did. it was so fun to see the fambam. my favorite part was dancing with everyone- wasn't that fun?? i wish we got some footage. we sure missed everyone that wasn't there. love you all!

TRIBUTE TO GRANDPA'S BOOK

I remembered something funny on my drive home yesterday and thought you might enjoy too... it's a tad random, but I figured it works along the theme of our anticipation for Grandpa's latest book!

So when I was little,
I always pictured Grandma Donna as she is in the colored photo
where she has the white sweater with little navy blue bows.

And, my young-girl self always thought she was identical to
the mother in the 1961 version of The Parent Trap:

It's been a while since I've seen this movie, but in my search for a good picture of Maureen O'Hara as "Maggie," I stumbled upon this fun video that was a good reminder of what an awesome job she does with a great character. (the little video gets kind of long but if you can stand the music, it's worth the fun memory...)

Anyway... as I thought about my childhood concepts of her... fantasizing about what she was like... picturing her as the Parent Trap Mom, I became more and more grateful for the work Grandpa has been doing—fun work, I'm sure, but work nonetheless—to get the home videos to where we could see them, and to dig up more stories and pictures for this book. It helps us all who never knew her to really know more of who she was. I always knew she was primary president, and PTA president, but I think it was only a few years ago as my mom narrated through the home movies that she was a jokester and that she was silly! :) (Is that where my Mom gets her silly side?)

So,
A BIG THANKS, Grandpa,
for all you've done so that I don't forever think she was Maggie, or imagining my own version of her personality, but that we can really come to know her from the man who loved her most!

Today I went to church, and guess who I saw...

Elder Juárez!!!

I was chatting with my mom the other day, and she told be that calvin got transferred into " a stake that starts with a 'W' that has a Spanish branch..." Right away, I knew it was the Wandsworth stake... one of the stakes that the BYU kids are assigned to. (We are each assigned to a group of 3 or 4, and given a ward to serve in... I am in the Hyde Park Stake, and teach primary and play the piano. You are probably thinking... Karli can't play the piano- you're right. I can't, but I pretend to play the top hand.) Cherie emailed the mission president to find out what ward he was assigned, and i was able to go see him today... fun huh? I took him some lovely cupcakes, some toblerone, lion candy bars, and a Spanish dictionary so he can brush up on his Spanish... I am sure it won't take him long... that kid has the gift of tongues. I also delivered words of love from his wonderful family... he loved hearing about everyone- and he sends his love. I was so excited to see him, and surprise him. He didn't know I would be there so it was perfect. I felt like a true Juárez with the whole missionary/surprise thing. . . I was in the front of the chapel when he walked in, and I ran to the back to deliver my gifts! I was a little flustered/excited as I was trying to explain my search to find him, and he was a bit confused i think, so I just told him we would talk after the meeting. We went to sunday school and I got a glimpse of him in his gospel action during our class, he is on fire. I can tell he is a great teacher and fabulous missionary. It was nice to see a familiar face after going so long without... I am sure the feelings were mutual. We had a good visit. I am so glad I was able to see him! He is doing great. Not that he would tell me any different, but I could tell. He is happy. Go Calvin! You rock... keep up the good work!

We walked in from Haycock's and what did we see?
...SEAN at home, unexpectedly!

We all grabbed an armful, and what a treat!
Big bear hugs and laughs so sweet!

He had a careful plan,* and so it came to be -
...Sean's home tonight unexpectedly!

Of course, the BEST part of the entire surprise was that we no longer had to wait until the next day to enjoy having him back home!

* Plan orchestrated and executed by Sean, along with Olivia's complete cooperation and participation; including, but not limited to, tampered mail, PhotoShopped Flight Plans, and a trip to SL airport.

A special thanks to Ben for filming Olivia's tricks, the airport arrival, and our shocked/delighted reactions... Priceless!

"We're teaching a family, José y Minerva, who will be baptized soon, and I can't wait! - Few things in life bring quite as much joy as does missionary work.

A long time ago I mentioned a Romero family and how I was there when they had their very first Family Home Evening. My trainer, Elder Cole & I taught and baptized one of their daughters, Pricila. A year later Elder Lovelace & I taught their oldest daughter, Dalia - And I even got to go to their temple sealing. The other day Elder Cordoba and I were over at their home for FHE and I reflected for a minute on how different it was from the first time. The Spirit was the same, but the family had changed completely since that first time. The children were quiet and reverent as the message was taught! They all sang along happily to 'Soy Un Hijo de Dios' The father, Ernesto, even said 'Gracias niños, por ser tan reverentes' - Han progresado mucho desde la primera vez. [Thank you children, for being so reverent - They've progressed so much since that first time].
I'm grateful that I got to play a part in the 'mighty change' that has come about in their family. They are now a 'familia eterna' thanks to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and 'the Great Plan of the Eternal God'.
He loves all of His children and he knows how to help each and every one of us. So be sure to reflect that love to those around you and to each other, through your Christlike examples.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've been not busy at ALL this summer besides swimming in the very beginning. Many of you may know that Jared conned Karli and me out of the boat this summer. Well as a result, we were able to learn about the great faith of our dear ancestors, Thomas and Eleanor Ord. It was real neat to see their names displayed at Martin's Cove and re-live a bit of what they might have gone through. If you have not had the chance to visit Martin's Cove, I strongly recommend it . Take the short 3 hour drive (stay in beautiful Rawlins, Wy-O-min) and feel the great spirit there.

Lets all remember Thomas and Eleanor's great sacrifice for us this upcoming Pioneer Day!

This past week, (as most of you know) my most beloved mother, has been alive a half a century!! We still love her. We made her breakfast in bed (or in her case, on the couch) and Ashton said to her happily "Happy half-a-century mom!!!". Of COURSE we all laughed! Another BIG day at our house - that began with finishing some intense to do's ... then family prayer, a father's blessing, a slice of spinach sausage pie (cal's fav) - then a drive across town in a blizzard, to the "EMPTY SEA" - (actually not so empty on Wednesdays) - and finished there with intense emotions - even hard on Ashton this time around.

And now back home as we sigh and relax - we're thinking that Calvin will not have a chance to sigh or relax until "lights out" at 10:30 pm - when he'll drop like a fly! And we wonder how in the world he'll wake to an alarm tomorrow morning at 6.
We're debating our spring break plans (flash flooding down at 'delicate arch' where we wanted to head tomorrow) Do i have any energy to get out of town or even make a plan?
... The girls vote for flipping Calvin's tornado hit room into Carmen's own room (a first) - What's your vote??

If you remember, I posted back in February: Ouch!!! Well, if you look closely, then you can see the gap between my top front teeth. It's closed!!! Here is a picture. I also changed my colors. I also got my 6th grade shots today. :( Not fun!! Anyway... yah that's my update. Also, if any of you can relate to my situation, all my 6th grade friends have totally not been the same. :( Most of them I've been with since Kindergarten. Now they're flipping and flopping on me. A year ago at Olivia's homecoming I could not stop eating the black beans I finally had to ask ol' aunt Cherie for the recipe. When no one was looking she snuck into the pantry and gave me one of these...

We finally broke them out and just as I remembered they were the best I have ever had. We have been saving these for a special occasion, and tonight was the night! After muy rico tostadas I can't wait to see Calvin off on his mission! (By the way, when dose Sean get home!) To all you black bean lovers, these take the cake! Little Jack Jared Tyson arrived this afternoon, weighing 7 lb. 5 oz., measuring 19.5 inches! Mom and baby are doing great! Leslie thinks he looks like Jared--- I think he looks like Grandpa Ord!
We feel so blessed and feel all is well in the world today.... and can't wait to get back there to hold him!

Happy March to everyone!!! Maybe it's just me, but I think this month usually holds some cool experiences (especially as far as family goes).

Examples from my past:

The birthdays of Olivia and Papá, I have celebrated for 16 years.
Last March, Olivia came home from her mission.
March has two holidays that are tons o' fun: Pi day, and St. Patrick's day! Also, there is a song by one of my favorite artists called Casimir Pulaski Day (the song, not the artist) which holds a cool memory for me of how compassionate my sister is.
This March, I get to say goodbye to some family, and go home to plenty more.

Hi, everyone!

Yesterday was a REALLY tough day (except for the fact that I played soccer with my Papá for a young women activity, but I was coughing and hacking the entire time). I am EXTREMELY happy that we (in our day and age) can get our teeth straightened out, BUT: it hurts extremely a lot!! And of course, my sore throat (I'm starting to show the signs of strep throat, which has been making it's way around our family) had to come the day before I received the WONDERFUL braces. Oh, gosh. I've lost my voice.

But, don't get me wrong, I'm actually really happy that we can do this. To prove it, here are some pictures Calvin took when I got into the car to go home. Okay, maybe I'm not ENTIRELY as happy as I seem in these pictures.

I wanted to acknowledge our handy husbands. I don't have pictures of all of their work, but I know that each one has done so much to please us wives.
Below are pictures of the homes that Tyler, Jared and Mark have built "on the side." I know that I take Jared's skills and service for granted. There are times that I complain that the project is taking too long, costing too much, making a big mess, or not done the way I wanted. I couldn't ask for a better husband. He is always willing to stay up late, complete projects during his vacation time, and fix things to make me happy. I just thought I would pay a small tribute to the men in our lives. Their "To Do List" is never done and they are always the last to complain. Also, I must express my appreciation to Mark for being a patient father and teaching Jared along the way. It won't be long before we send our sons to work with Grandpa.

(Earlier today, Ashton sat with me and wanted to read updates from everyone's blogs, and then said, "I want a blog, and I just thought of a title..." then he told me the above. I said that he already had a blog right here! - For today, he'd like the background of 'his blog' to be red... it's the week of Valentine's, so that works!)

"HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! -- Oh wait, I just made this. So no anniversary yet. I told my mom that it was MY turn to have a blog. I'm really enjoying the idea. So i have an F-4J that my Dad bought in a salvo of planes and one night as i walked into his room i found a MIG 21 that was 1/100 (the same scale as the Phantom). Also a damaged MIG 17 came in the mail with it. It's vertical stabilizer was bent, but my Dad managed to straighten it. But there's still one more thing that it's missing, it had a shattered canopy. I suggested to take one of the scrap canopies that he already had and cut it in a shape that would fit. But Papá suggested first that he would try to glue the canopy's pieces together. So he said he would try both. But in one of the ways or another, one of them should work. It remains on display in his room, but i have faith that one of the ways will work and he'll be able to put the canopy back on." by Ashton Malcolm Juárez

I just thought we could give a shout out to our little mothers right now.
I've been awake since about 4:00 this morning thinking about them:
Amie in the early stages of pregnancy--morning sickness, etc.-- with a sick little Emilie (mono)
Leslie in the later stages of pregnancy-- sore, can't bend over, etc.-- with a sick little Ella (bladder infection)
Lauri with newborn Mya-- worn out, hormones still out of whack etc.--with a sick little Mya (RSV)
We feel your pain.
I'm sure you weren't expecting all of this when you signed up. It takes everything you've got and then some more.
Motherhood is not for wimps. And pregnancy is not for the feint of heart (or stomach).
I know there are times when you feel like yours is a most unappreciated lot in life. This is the absolute hardest and most exhausting thing you've ever done.
We just want you to know that we salute you, we support you, we pray for you, we love you. Thank you for sacrificing your time, your sleep, your health, your own interests, your otherwise glamorous life, and your sanity to bring these precious children into the world and give them all you have. You are all doing an amazing job... (and I'm including Andrea and Lyric here too!)

I can remember being willing to give my right arm for just one night of uninterrupted sleep. Now I would give anything to be able to have my kids little for just one more day...

And now, while I'm sure your kids have already awakened you from a blissful night of sleep and you're at it again, I think I'll go back to bed! :)

Long Distance

I am so grateful these days for technology. It's really wonderful to be able to stay up to date on my family from so far away. I even got to watch Calvin open his call. And I don't have to wait for another five weeks to find out how every one is doing. Speaking of which, I'm so glad Mya is okay. Brig and Emily and all of you are constantly in my prayers.

For those of you who don't know, I'm in Guatemala right now, in the same city where my dad grew up. I love it here! It's completely worth it. Sometimes it's hard, like when there is only one bathroom with out a sink because the others are being repaired, or when I feel bad for refusing more food 'cause of how fast I get full/how much I miss my mom's dinners, or when I don't drink the milk at the end of a bowl of cereal because the dairy here is weird. But it's all worth it. I really miss Utah, but... well, like I keep saying, this is worth it. Thanks to Mom and Papá for letting me come.

I don't have a digital camera, or I'd post pictures. I know people who have one, so I'll try to get some fotos soon.

But hey Josie, your mommy has access to a picasa web album from your photographer RM cousin, Jordan... who happened to be in Guate the first week you were... so there you GO!!!

Yet another family member to add to your prayer list...our little Emilie was diagnosed with mono last night (see here). We are grateful it's not something worse, and know the Lord is watching over us and our sweet Emilie Sue.
p.s. I am bummed that this means we won't be able to come visit sweet little Mya for a few more weeks! I'm so glad she's doing better!

Update on Mya

Little Mya got to go home from the hospital last night after being there 4 days. At first, they were going to send her home on oxygen, but she was doing well enough that she didn't need to. We are grateful for priesthood blessings and modern medicine! She is so precious... those who haven't met her need to! On Sunday at the hospital, she smiled at me (she's just starting that) and I totally melted! It made my whole day! We feel very blessed... Thanks for your prayers---

We have another Bishop !!!!

We received a phone call late Saturday night from Brig informing us that in a meeting with his stake president on Thursday he was called to be the Bishop of the Spanish Ward in the Menlo Park Stake. Brig has had an association with that ward for ten years in one capacity or another, most recently as the High Council advisor, having been released from that assignment about a year ago. When he mentioned this to the President Jacobs he was told that it was time for the ward to become bi-lingual and that he had been impressed by the spirit that Brig was the one needed to accomplish that goal. The Spanish members of the Ward need to learn English in order to be more successful in establishing themselves in America. Needless to say Brig is very humbled by this call and has spent some sleepless nights. He and Tara went to the Temple and received inspiration and peace and strength to face this new challenge. He will be sustained on February 15th. Congratulation Brig, our pride in you and love for you knows no bounds. We join together as a family in prayer for your success. Dad.

We're praying for precious MYA's strength ~ and for TARA's :) ~ and for CAL's future comps! ;D

Precious little Mya

Mya was taken to Primary Children's by ambulance last night around midnight with RSV. She is doing o.k. relatively, but is having a hard time breathing because of the congestion. We're glad she's there because they are taking good care of her, but it's so heartbreaking because she's just so little! She will probably have to stay for a few days. Please keep her in your prayers!

But lo and behold, it was actually in there just NOW that maya and i had a race to the mailbox. Even through the ice and snow, and her accusations that i ran like an old lady (in my church shoes)... i still beat her, by the skin of my teeth!

Hello Family!
I know you are all picking yourself up off the floor, cant believe Im finally doing this.(sue & lindsay roped me into it).Matt,Nick and I are in Utah visiting family and SnowbORDing.
We are all happy and well. Roberta, ashley and I
are planing a 50 mile bicycle ride together on March 14 in Solvang CA. Hopefully Brig will join us. Matt is working with me on the homes were building, Nick is a junior and just finished his first semester finals, he is the 1st assistant in the priest quorum and has his first girl friend. Roberta is busy being the R.S. Pres., baby sitting Jackson, making finish selections for decorating our house, and taking care of me! She works much harder than I and we love her so much for it. Hope all is well with everyone, Luv ya.

Like mother, like daughter... or in our case, like daughter, like mother! I guess my mom was jealous of all the attention I was getting with my foot, so she went and had her foot operated on yesterday. Now we're both sporting lovely boots! At least I'm paying her back now and waiting on her a bit while she recuperates...
Luckily, I get my boot off in a couple of days, she has hers for 4 more weeks!

This is in response to your comment on my blog post. I started to write this as a comment on that same post but didn't know if you'd see it. So I'm putting it here & I think you'll see it sooner. . .

World's Longest Comments are just as wonderful to me as chocolate mint truffles. (Believe me, that means wonderful!) Thanks for your uplifting reminder. Upon receiving the gift, I meant to tell you (well, I was going to write it in the wedding thank you card--to be printed on Monday & sent soon thereafter) that I remember that Pres. Eyring talk WELL from the Piantini chapel in the DR. I fully recognized that it was my last General Conference in the field and I have such an admiration for Pres. Eyring and that talk probably stood out to me most. Not to mention the fact that it promoted journaling so much, which I love anyway.

But I shamefully admit that we have not yet used our "Hand of the Lord" journal yet! That night that I read your message, I remembered & I'm excited! (We'd already kind of started doing it vocally each night, but I'm a much bigger fan of writing & leaving a record.) Plus that ritual is valuable on those nights after long hard days. It is so great to focus on the beauty; the positive; the joy; and the power of a loving Father's role in our lives. "Let the earth break forth into singing. . ." and me too! How wonderful to know the name by which we all can be saved. How wonderful to know exactly what God wants us to do as communicated to us by personal revelation and revelation of his servant, Thomas S. Monson. What a joy to know that because of the role of the atonement, there is HOPE! Hope is a commandment and the more we try to hope, the more hope we'll have! (I know that seems kind of obvious, but it has kind of been an epiphany for me and I just want to share it! Does it make any sense?)

I'm excited to have branched out a bit this semester: I have one class in my schedule that is not design-related! It's Family History, and I'm really excited to learn all about it. I've always been way into journals, loved scrapbooks, kept tickets & newspaper clippings, certificates and awards, and now I get to see which of my ancestors loved these things too...

My assignments revolve around one family the whole semester. I'm going to email you, too, Brig, just in case you don't visit this every day. But I wanted to let the rest of you know what I'm up to so you can help if possible as well. (Or learn about what I learn too). It's all Greek to me now, but apparently I've got a teacher so she can teach me.

But, FYI, I have to choose one family (one set of parents and their children) with the following preferred qualities (family doesn't have to qualify for them all):

lived in USA
at least 4 children
parents married after 1850
at least one of the children born before 1910
needed temple work for some of family members

So Brig, (ahem, Family Historian), do any certain families come to mind from that time period? Like I said, these are "more like guidelines anyway"... even if the family has all the temple work done, I still need a family where I can practice using software, gathering information, etc. Any particular family group sheet that I can help with?

Or if any of the rest of you know, I'm hoping for anyone's knowledge and help!

I'm excited about the point of the class: "to come to KNOW and LOVE your family".

We had almost a foot of snow here. Calvin came home from work one day and we wanted to make a snowman. So we did. It's 8 feet tall or more.

Also, every year, a huge icicle grows on the west side of our house. This is the longest it has ever grown!

Our Annual Christmas Girl Party!

Monday, Dec 15th-

5:00 at Sue's

(we know it's late notice, but come anyway!)

In the spirit of the season, our party is going to be all about giving!

So, if you're not in the Christmas spirit yet, this will do it!

Here's what we're planning:

A Goodie Exchange: Bring a batch of goodies...we'll pack some up for Sean, and each have a plate to take home!

A Package for Sean: Elder Sean is our only missionary this year. Bring something to fill up his package (i.e. toothpaste, gag gift, etc)

A baby shower for Lauri: Little "Mya Claire Tyson" is now due any minute! (I'm sure her mother hopes she won't even last until Monday!) Bring a gift to help welcome little Mya into the family!

Hygiene Kits for the Humanitarian Center: Instead of a craft this year, we're going to assemble 25 hygiene kits. What better time of year to do this? See information below...

Gift Exchange: We don't want anyone going home empty-handed, so bring a $10.00 wrapped gift and we'll have some fun exchanging them!

Hygiene Kit Information:

Here is what we need, sign up for what to bring by commenting on the blog, or calling Sandy. If you don't care what you bring, we'll make assignments on Friday night for those who haven't signed up.

Each kit has:

2 unbreakable combs (no sharp handles)

4 toothbrushes (packaged)

1 tube of toothpaste (6-8 oz., no pumps)

2 bars of soap (approximately 4 to 5 oz.)

2 hand towels (new towels, approximately 15" by 25")

So that means we need:

50 combs (you can buy them in packages with lots in them)

100 toothbrushes (check the dollar stores-sometimes there's 4 to a package)

25 tubes of toothpaste (again, the dollar store)

50 bars of soap (ditto)

50 hand towels (Sandy will get these)

Just sign up for whatever you think you can do...it doesn't have to be a lot if you can't...
